headache treatment

Headaches can interfere with work, exercise, sleep, concentration, and everyday life. We take the time to understand your symptoms and identify musculoskeletal factors that may be contributing to your headaches, then build an individualized treatment plan based on what we find and your goals.

headaches can show up in different ways

Headaches may feel like pressure, tension, aching, or throbbing around different areas of the head and face. Some people also notice neck pain or stiffness, discomfort around the base of the skull, or symptoms that seem to change with certain movements, positions, or prolonged periods of sitting or computer work.

Headaches can have many different causes, which is why understanding the full picture matters. We’ll look at when your headaches occur, what seems to make them better or worse, whether neck or upper-body symptoms occur alongside them, and how they affect your daily life to determine whether musculoskeletal factors may be contributing to your symptoms.

WHAT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO HEADACHES?

Headaches can have many different causes, and not every headache is related to the muscles, joints, or other tissues we treat. For some people, however, symptoms may be influenced by factors involving the neck, shoulders and upper back, particularly when headaches occur alongside neck pain, stiffness, or changes in movement.

That’s why our assessment looks beyond the location of the headache itself. Your history, symptom pattern, neck, shoulder and upper back movement, strength, mobility, and daily activities can help us determine whether musculoskeletal factors may be contributing to your headaches and whether our approach is appropriate for you.

NECK + UPPER BACK

Muscles, connective tissues, and joints of the neck and upper back may contribute to symptoms in some types of headaches.

MOVEMENT + ACTIVITY

Neck movement, exercise, training, or repetitive positions may influence symptoms when a musculoskeletal component is present.

DAILY DEMANDS

Computer work, studying, driving, sleep positions, and other everyday demands may influence neck tension, stiffness, and associated headaches.

how we treat headaches

When our assessment suggests that musculoskeletal factors may be contributing to your headaches, treatment is individualized based on what we find, how your symptoms behave, and what you want to get back to doing.

Your care may combine specific hands-on treatment with personalized rehabilitation exercises to address relevant areas of the neck and upper back, improve movement and strength, and reduce factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

HANDS-ON TREATMENT

Specific soft tissue treatment, chiropractic adjustments, and joint mobilizations may be used when appropriate to address painful or restricted areas of the neck and upper back and help improve movement.

PERSONALIZED REHAB

Exercises are selected based on your individual needs and may focus on neck and upper body strength, mobility, and movement control based on what we find during your assessment.

BUILDING CAPACITY

As you improve, we progressively prepare your neck and upper body for the demands of work, exercise, training, and other activities associated with your symptoms.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST VISIT

Your first visit is about understanding what’s going on and determining whether musculoskeletal factors may be contributing to your headaches.

We’ll talk through your symptoms, when they started, what they feel like, what makes them better or worse, and whether you experience other symptoms alongside your headaches. From there, we’ll assess your neck and upper body movement, mobility, strength, and other relevant factors.

If imaging or further medical evaluation is appropriate, we’ll help guide you through the next steps.

When appropriate, we’ll begin treatment during your first visit and walk you through what we found, what we recommend, and how we’ll progress your care toward your goals.
